The Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts 2022

The Canada Council for the Arts has been celebrating the exceptional careers of Canadian artists with the Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts (GGArts) since 1999. The awards represent the most prestigious distinctions for the artists that make up Canada’s vibrant visual and media arts community.

Up to eight awards are distributed every year: six awards recognize artistic achievements, one award recognizes artistic merit in the fine crafts (the Saidye Bronfman Award) and one award recognizes an outstanding contribution to contemporary visual arts, media arts or fine crafts.

This year, the National Gallery of Canada has organized an exhibition that creates dialogues between the artists’ practices and works from the Gallery’s contemporary and historical collections. From installations in the Gallery’s public spaces to interventions that disrupt and unsettle narratives within the permanent collection, the eight laureates create meaning in unexpected ways.

Organized by the National Gallery of Canada in collaboration with the Canada Council for the Arts.
