This year’s La Nuit des Idées event will be framed as a global conversation around the theme, “More?”. It will question the global trend of acceleration, accumulation, and overexploitation in our modern society, and the dynamics of “always more” as the mainspring of progress. Is more always better? More people, more production, more technology, and more consumption lead to more destruction and pollution of the world’s resources.

In a time of dramatic climate shifts and questioning of the prevailing political and socio-economic systems, what are the responsibilities and opportunities for artists and creative practitioners from all disciplines? Can art be an agent of change to helps us rethink the world and mobilize activists and voices, just as politics and science can?

The event will include special gallery tours and an evening in-person moderated conversation in the National Gallery of Canada’s Auditorium. It will be followed by a screening of Flore Vasseur’s documentary, Vivre en grand/Bigger Than Us. Food and drink will be available for purchase.

Speakers include:

  • Dr. Bénédicte Ramade, academic researcher

  • David Charette, solo Indigenous drum artist, musician and composer

  • Flore Vasseur, French filmmaker

  • Hannah Claus, artist

  • Hélène Dorion, writer

  • Jonathan Shaughnessy, Director, Curatorial Initiatives, National Gallery of Canada

  • Professor Vincent Mirza, Director, Research Centre on the Future of Cities, University of Ottawa
