Art Metropole is an artist-run centre founded in 1974 by General Idea (1968-1994). One of the first artist-run centres in Canada, Art Metropole is part of the international network of parallel galleries committed to conceptual art. The art work (artists' books, audio tapes, videotapes, and multiples) produced and documentation about this movement was collected, catalogued, and preserved by Art Metropole, exhibited there, loaned for exhibition to other organizations, and made available to researchers. Art Metropole's other activities include a publication program that concentrates on producing works that relate to the material it collects and exhibits, and a distribution program that sells Art Metropole's publications, artists' publications (including books, catalogues, special editions, and videotapes), and other publications of interest to patrons through its bookstore. In 1996, Art Metropole ceased its collecting activities in order to focus on its exhibition, publication, and distribution programs. In 1999, the art work, documentation and archival collections collected and preserved by Art Metropole were donated to the National Gallery of Canada Library and Archives.
The fonds consists of Art Metropole's operational records. More specifically the fonds consists of records related to the centre's exhibition, project, publication, and video distribution programs, the operation of the bookstore, grant applications, art association membership information and documentation files from ANNPAC/RACA (Association of National Non-profit Artists' Centres/Regroupement d'artistes des centres alternatives). The fonds also contains mail art, artworks, correspondence, and related ephemera collected by General Idea and Art Metropole.
