Rob G. C. Sobey, ICD.D

Director of the Emeritus Board
As a fourth-generation member, Rob worked in his family’s business for 30 years before retiring to focus on volunteering and governance.
Rob sits on the boards of Empire Company Ltd., SeaFort Capital, Institute of Corporate Directors, Queen’s Smith School of Business and in addition to various NFPs and for-profit boards, he has served as governor or trustee for Queen’s University, Dalhousie University, NSCAD, NSCC. He currently chairs several ongoing scholarship and bursary programs.
Rob is Chairman of the Sobey Art Foundation and, since 2006, leads its annual Sobey Art Award. He is past Chairman of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, an Honourary lifetime Governor of AGNS, a Distinguished Patron of the NGC, and is Chair of the DR Sobey Foundation. Rob and his wife Monique are passionate collectors of contemporary Canadian Art.
An Honourary Colonel of the 1st Field Artillery Regiment of Halifax for twelve years, Rob received a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for this work.
Selected Top CEO for Atlantic Canada in 2009 by Atlantic Business Magazine, in 2011 Rob was inducted into their Business Hall of Fame. He has an undergrad from Queen’s University, an MBA from Babson College, and the ICD.D designation. He received an Honourary Diploma from NSCC.
Rob resides in rural Nova Scotia with Monique. They have a son, a daughter, and one grandson.
