Fred S. Fountain C.M., LL.D

Director of the Emeritus Board
A founding partner of the law firm Franklin, Mitton, Fountain and Thompson, formerly counsel to the law firm Burke Thompson, Fred Fountain is also Chancellor Emeritus of Dalhousie University. A member of the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society since 1975, he was, for nine years, Judge and Chairman of the Regional Assessment Appeal Court. He has been President and Chief Executive Officer of The Great Eastern Corporation Limited, an investment company, since 1985.
A former chairman of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and Trustee of the National Gallery of Canada for seven years, Mr. Fountain was Chair of the Working Miracles Capital Campaign for the QEII Health Sciences Centre, which raised over $44 million. His numerous volunteer commitments have included the boards of Dalhousie University, the Scotia Festival of Music, and World Wildlife Fund Canada (Atlantic Advisory Council). He has been a leading philanthropic supporter of many organizations in the arts, education, health and conservation.
