The Winners of the New Generation Photography Award 2021
Dustin Brons, Chris Donovan and Dainesha Nugent-Palache are the winners of the 2021 New Generation Photography Award. Their photographic work speaks to the environment, interactions and society, as well as the relevance of past and present. The New Generation Photography Award, administered by Scotiabank in partnership with the National Gallery of Canada, celebrates young Canadians working in lens-based art.
DUSTIN BRONS
Based in Vancouver, Dustin Brons works in photography, video and performance art that, in turn, is documented in his work. He considers everyday objects, materials, historical art images and text within social themes of climate change, political understanding and urban landscape. A graduate of the University of British Columbia and the University of California San Diego, Brons has had solo exhibitions at CSA Space in Vancouver and at Sunday Project in Chicago, and his work has been presented in group exhibitions in New York, San Diego, Vancouver and Mexico City.
CHRIS DONOVAN
Having completed studies in fine arts and photojournalism, Chris Donovan is a lens-based artist whose work explores community and industry. He creates visual narratives that reflect upon humanity, often in the contexts of wealth inequality and residential landscapes. Dividing his time between Saint John, New Brunswick, and Toronto, Ontario, he has exhibited work in both cities, as well as at the SoHo Photo Gallery in New York and the Capture Photo Festival in Vancouver. He is a member of the Boreal Collective.
DAINESHA NUGENT-PALACHE
Toronto-based artist Dainesha Nugent-Palache works primarily in performative video and photography. She is inspired by the power of images – how they tell stories, along with their ability to capture a person’s attention. In her work, she explores stories of women, femininity and the Afro-Caribbean diaspora and addresses distortions created by representations of glamour and excess. She is a graduate of Ontario College of Art and Design University and has exhibited extensively, including in Toronto, Calgary and New York.
Work by the winners of the 2021 and the 2020 New Generation Photography Award will be featured in two group exhibitions at the National Gallery of Canada in October 2021.
