Biographical SketchThe photographer and visual artist Sorel Cohen was born in Montreal, Quebec, in 1936. She received a B.F.A. and an M.F.A. from Concordia University, Montreal, in 1974 and 1979. Her Master's thesis examined the feminist impact on art of the 1970s. Cohen's photographic work, often biographical and generally addressing the place of women in art history, reflects a broad range of influences that include Francis Bacon, Sigmund Freud, and Edward Muybridge. Among her key works are Bacon/Muybridge (1979), An Extended and Continuous Metaphor (1983); Wounds of Experience (1995-1996), Divans Dolorosa (2008), and Lacrimosa (2012). Cohen has had numerous solo exhibitions, including at the Institute for Art and Urban Resources, P.S. 1, New York (1983); the Musée d'art contemporain in Montreal (1986); Presentation House, Vancouver (1987); Les ateliers Nadar, Marseilles, France (1994); and the Centre Culturel Canadien, Paris (2003). Her work is represented in many important private and public collections, including the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; the Cabinet de la photographiqie, Bibliothèque nationale, Paris; the Bibliothèque Kandinsky, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts; and the Musée d'art contemporain, Montreal. Cohen has been awarded numerous grants and awards, including the prestigious Duke and Duchess of York Photography Prize from the Canada Council (1988). Sorel Cohen continues to live and work in Montreal. Files are organized by year and contain correspondence; exhibition invitations, posters, and reviews; grant proposals; photographs; and press clippings. The material provides extensive information regarding Cohen's photographic oeuvre and her major projects, and the exhibition of her work at various galleries and museums in Canada and abroad.
