Andreas Feininger, an American architect, photographer and writer was born on December 27, 1906 in Paris, France, the first son of Julia and Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956), an American painter and Bauhaus instructor. Educated in Germany, Feininger studied cabinet making at the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1922, and architecture at the Bauschule in Weimar and the Staatliche Bauschule in Zerbst, where he graduated summa cum laude in 1928. During these early years, Feininger taught himself photography, and later, how to craft his own photographic equipment, like his super-telephoto and super-close-up cameras. Feininger began exhibiting his photographs with the landmark exhibition Film und Foto organized by the German Werkbund in Stuttgart in 1929. In 1933, after working as an architect for several years in Germany and France, Feininger moved to Stockholm Sweden, where he married Gertrud "Wysse" Hägg and welcomed the birth of his son, Tomas (b. 1935). Unable to find work as an architect, Feininger began working as freelance photographer for several major architectural firms in Stockholm. Feininger also began writing technical articles about photography, and in 1934 he published his first technical instruction book, Menschen vor der Kamera. He published eight books between 1934 and 1939.
In 1939 Feininger and his family moved to the United States and settled in New York City. Feininger found a job as a photojournalist for Black Star Agency (1940-41), and later as a staff photographer at LIFE magazine (1942-1962). Feininger continued with his photographic career as a freelance photographer (1963-1986) and by publishing technical, theoretical, and artistic books on photography. Over the course of his career, Feininger wrote over 50 published books which have been translated into thirteen languages worldwide. His work has been exhibited at the International Center of Photography, MoMa, the PENTAX Forum, LACMA, the National Gallery of Canada and in museums around the world. Feininger was awarded two lifetime achievement awards for his photographic career from the American Society of Magazine Photographers (1986) and the International Center of Photography (1991). He died in 1999 at the age of 92 years old.

The fonds illustrates Andreas Feininger's career and interests as a writer and photographer in the United States of America in the late-twentieth century. Textual records in the fonds consist of correspondence relating to Feininger's writing and book publishing projects; correspondence concerning exhibitions and requests for image permissions; unpublished manuscripts written by Feininger in the 1990s; magazine and newspaper clippings relating to Feininger's career; and guest books and photographs from the vernissages of exhibitions of Feininger's photographs at the PENTAX Forum in Japan and the Bauhaus-Archiv in Germany. Video recordings in the fonds consist of an unedited video interview with Andreas Feininger in two parts; a recorded video of visitors in the Feininger PENTAX Works exhibition at the PENTAX Forum in Tokyo; and a short documentary on Feininger's life and photographs.

The fonds was acquired from the Estate of Gertrud Feininger in 2009. Gertrud Feininger came into possession of the fonds after the death of her late husband, Andreas Feininger.

Series consists largely of letters received by Feininger and a few carbon copies of his outgoing correspondence. The bulk of the correspondence is comprised of letters from Feininger's publishers in Germany and from around the world about image permissions, layout, and the publication of his monographs. The PENTAX Exhibition file contains letters from the PENTAX Forum concerning an exhibition of Andreas Feininger's PENTAX photographs and the layout of its associated catalog. The Re: Lyonel Feininger file contains letters concerning an exhibition of Lyonel Feininger's paintings and requests for permissions to reproduce his works and a photograph of Lyonel by Andreas Feininger for a publication. The material in the Exhibition Essay file relates to a biographical exhibition essay about Andreas Feininger written for Exiles and Emigres, a major exhibition at Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) sent to Feininger for his corrections. The International Publishers file also contains 3 contact sheets of Feininger's photographs that were included with a letter about the layout of one of his monographs. |

Series consists of photocopies of 60 sketches given to Andreas Feininger by his father Lyonel Feininger, two calendar books from 1995 and 1996 featuring Feininger's photographs of New York in the 1940s, and the catalog of materials related to Andreas Feininger at George Eastman House, an international museum of photography and film. The sketches mainly feature drawings from the travels of Lyonel Feininger, and there is an inscription written by Feininger on the first page. Both of the calendar books have an inscription written by Feininger to his wife, Wysse Feininger. |
