Collection Summary

Title: Laura Brandon fonds.
Dates: – ca. 1915-2006.
Quantity:  – 2.76 m of textual records and other material.

Biographical Sketch

Laura Brandon (b. 1951), with an Honours B.A. in European History and Art History (Bristol, 1973) and background experience in freelance writing, lecturing and curating, began a research project on the life and work of Canadian artist Pegi Nicol MacLeod (1904-1949) in the early 1980s. Following an article published in Arts Atlantic (Summer 1983), Brandon received a Canada Council Explorations grant in 1984 to support further research for a book-length biography of the artist. Brandon compiled research materials and developed this project in draft form on an on-going basis during the later 1980s; she continued in this vein of inquiry with her M.A. thesis in Art History, focusing on Nicol MacLeod's use of self-portraiture (Queen's University, 1992). In 1992, Brandon became Curator of War Art at the Canadian War Museum. She has subsequently held related positions at this institution, becoming Art and War Historian in 2005. In her role as curator, Brandon has organized two Canadian War Museum touring exhibitions featuring the work of Nicol MacLeod: Paragraphs in Paint: The Second World War Art of Pegi Nicol MacLeod (1998, solo exhibition) and Canvas of War - Masterpieces from the Canadian War Museum (2000). Brandon's PhD dissertation in Canadian History on the Canadian War Museum's collection (Carleton University, 2002) encompasses the research and catalogue text for the Paragraphs in Paint exhibition. As a guest curator for the Carleton University Art Gallery, Brandon organized the 2005 retrospective, touring exhibition, Pegi Nicol MacLeod: A Life in Art. The publication of Pegi By Herself: The Life of Pegi Nicol MacLeod, Canadian Artist (McGill-Queen's University Press, 2005), Brandon's biography of the artist, coincided with this exhibition, as did the release of Michael Ostroff's film for the National Film Board of Canada, Pegi Nicol: Something Dancing About Her (N.F.B., 2005), for which Brandon's research files were consulted and in which she appears. Brandon has been an Adjunct Professor at Carleton University since 2005. She has lectured internationally and written extensively on war art and the work of Canadian war artists. Brandon's publications include the monographs Art or Memorial? The Forgotten History of Canada's War Art (University of Calgary Press, 2006) and Art and War (I.B. Tauris, 2007).

Pegi Nicol MacLeod: Research Files. – ca. 1948-2006. – 2 m of textual records, 114 photographs, and 6 sound recordings.

Series consists of materials collected by Laura Brandon over the course of her research on Pegi Nicol MacLeod for various projects. A card index developed by Brandon related to the files is also included in the series. Files contain correspondence between Brandon and numerous individuals who knew Pegi Nicol MacLeod during her lifetime in widely varying capacities, as well as private individuals and public institutions who own (or have owned) her work, and art dealers and commercial galleries. There are also original letters written by Pegi Nicol MacLeod to C. Mary (Greey) Graham (4), Brandon's mother, and photocopies of Nicol MacLeod's letters to a number of other friends, artist colleagues and associates (with some duplication among files), including copies of unpublished letters to Charles Comfort (5), Desmond Pacey (4), Paraskeva Clark (1), and others, along with related correspondence. Files also contain a small number of photographs of artworks, individuals and locations, and photocopies and colour-copies of images of works by Nicol MacLeod; audio-recordings of Brandon's interviews with Marian Scott and Molly Bobak, and hand-written notes from other interviews; photocopies of archival research material and documentation of correspondence with several libraries; essays, publications, press clippings, news references, obituaries, journal articles, and book chapters, by various authors (often as photocopies); grant application records; Brandon's essays and conference papers on Nicol MacLeod; numerous photocopies of transcripts from interviews conducted by Joan Murray; and information concerning sales of work by Nicol MacLeod from art auction catalogues. As a component of her research, Brandon consulted the materials that Ruth Comfort Jackson (1927-1998), daughter of Canadian artist Charles Comfort (1900-1994), had compiled during the mid 1970s for an uncompleted writing project on Pegi Nicol MacLeod. Photocopies of these materials have been integrated by Brandon throughout her own research files. Following Comfort Jackson's death, her family gave her records concerning Pegi Nicol MacLeod to Brandon. The records were donated to the National Gallery of Canada Library by Brandon and now comprise the Ruth Comfort Jackson fonds.

Pegi Nicol MacLeod: Photographic Documentation – ca. 1915-2005. – 2,227 photographs and 1 cm of textual records.

Series consists of colour and b&w photographic prints, slides and negatives, and some related correspondence. Included is photographic documentation of works by Pegi Nicol MacLeod in a number of Canadian public collections and North American private collections, as well as photographs which act as biographical references by depicting Pegi Nicol MacLeod at different stages of her life, other individuals with whom she is associated, locations, buildings and events. A number of the b&w photographs of Pegi Nicol MacLeod, her young daughter Jane MacLeod, and Fredericton, are original prints that were produced by Madge Smith, Fredericton photographer and craft/art dealer. The files containing photographs of works are titled thematically following Brandon's organization of the material; in some instances there are photographs included that do not correspond with the file title. In a number of cases, information pertaining to the work documented is indicated on the verso of the photograph, or the frame of the slide. Much of this photographic documentation, in the form of negatives and colour prints, was produced by Brandon as she visited numerous collections over the course of her research. Photographs of the private collections of Nicol MacLeod's daughter, Jane (MacLeod) Pappidas with husband Aristides Pappidas, and Florence Millman, Montreal art dealer and collector, comprise a considerable portion of the works represented in this series. Brandon last photographed the Pappidas' collection in 2002-2003, and the resultant colour prints, negatives and lists of works are found here; also included is Brandon's correspondence with Aristides Pappidas and with the Art Gallery of Ontario concerning the documentation of this work and its potential donation to the AGO.

Sub-series consists of materials related to Brandon's writing projects concerning Pegi Nicol MacLeod, as well as the e-mail correspondence that Brandon conducted over the broad course of her work on this artist. The e-mail correspondence covers a range of topics, dealing with general research concerning Pegi Nicol MacLeod while also demonstrating Brandon's involvement in exhibitions, films and writing projects. Included are copies of academic essays and published articles authored by Brandon, and her 1992 M.A. Thesis, "Exploring the 'Undertheme': The Self-Portraits of Pegi Nicol MacLeod MacLeod (1904-1949)." Materials pertaining to the completion and publication of Brandon's 2005 biography, Pegi by Herself: The Life of Pegi Nicol MacLeod, Canadian Artist, encompass the following: selected manuscript drafts; grant applications and records; correspondence between Brandon and McGill-Queen's University Press; external readers' comments on drafts; photographs and high quality transparencies used in the printing of book figures and plates; as well as promotional materials, press clippings, book reviews and news coverage. The 1986 biography manuscript presents the initial, book-length study as conceived by Brandon in a chronological arrangement of materials. It documents the direction and scope of her project in its early, formative inception and contains material not included in the final publication. This is a working, notational draft, comprised of lengthy excerpts from the materials compiled in her research files. Notably, this draft includes typed text from interviews conducted by Brandon and Ruth Comfort Jackson that are not otherwise transcribed. Mary Graham's extensive handwritten edits, revisions, suggestions and comments are included on the 1986 manuscript. Graham's continued involvement in editing the text and contributing to the content of the biography is evident with written comments and inserts included with the 2003 manuscripts.
