Biographical Sketch

In November of 1945, upon his return from serving in the Second World War, John Laurel Russell founded John L. Russell Reg'd., located on the corner of Sherbrooke Street and MacKay in Montreal. After only two years, the shop moved to a more prominent location at 1504 Sherbrooke Street, where it would remain until its closure in 1994. Gerald Brenner joined John L. Russell Reg'd. in November of 1958, and would eventually become Russell's business partner. In 1960, Russell expanded the business into Ontario, opening Beaver Hall Antiques Ltd. in Gananoque. More space was again required, and in 1970-1971, Russell and Brenner moved the store to 21 King Street. From the outset, Russell's focus was Canadiana, and his particular interests lay in Canadian silver and early Canadian portraits; soon, his knowledge and expertise in these areas became highly sought after by collectors and curators alike. Russell's notes on silver are extensive, and include sketches of maker's marks and clippings from catalogues and magazines relating to the history of Canadian silver production. His genealogical research into the families whose portraits and antiques he bought and sold is equally impressive, and includes photographs, letters, and notes related to the de Lotbinière, Monk, Baby, Reiffenstein/Goddard/Cady, and Coffin families, amongst others. Russell was called upon to lend items for the Canada Pavilion at Expo '67 in Montreal, and in 1980 received the Order of Canada. In 1981, he served as a member of the committee that helped select furniture for the Government of Canada's wedding gift to Prince Charles and Princess Diana. During the 1980s and 1990s, Russell was also a member of the Official Residencies Collections Advisory Committee, which advised the Official Residencies Council on furnishings and cultural artifacts offered to the Crown. In addition, Russell developed strong ties and relationships with various museums and galleries, and many, such as the Royal Ontario Museum, the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the McCord Museum, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the National Gallery of Canada, now own pieces either purchased from or donated by Russell. In 1987 and 1990, Sotheby's (Toronto) held auctions showcasing the John L. Russell Collection of Canadiana. In 1994, John L. Russell Reg'd. closed, and its contents were moved to Beaver Hall Antiques Ltd. Two years later, the latter closed as well, and an auction was organized through Tim Potter Auction Services, Kingston, to sell the entire content of the shop. Russell died on March 13th, 2003. In October of the following year, his estate was auctioned through Ritchies of Toronto.
