William Robinson Watson, Canadian art dealer, was born in Freshfield, England in 1887. He immigrated to Canada in 1905 and three years later acquired the business of Montreal art dealer, John Ogilvy. In 1921 Watson established Watson Art Galleries at St. Catherine and Bishop streets and in 1932 he moved the gallery to 1434 Sherbrooke St. West, where it remained until Watson retired in March 1958. Watson Art Galleries dealt mainly in Dutch, French, and English paintings but were also one of the first art galleries in Canada to promote Canadian art. Watson represented Maurice Cullen (1866-1934), and published a book on the artist in 1931 (Maurice Cullen, R.C.A.: A Record of His Struggle and Achievement, Ryerson Press). He also wrote numerous articles about art for Canadian newspapers and magazines, as well as a short memoir of his life entitled Retrospective: Recollections of a Montreal Art Dealer (published posthumously by the University of Toronto Press in 1974).
