Elizabeth Marjorie Smith (1898-1974) was born in England and raised in Fredericton, New Brunswick. She developed an interested in photography after graduating from Fredericton High School in 1917 and worked at Harvey Studios until 1930. Between 1936 and 1961 she ran her own shop on Queen Street, where she sold hand-coloured photographs, pottery, jewellery, woven goods, and paintings by Canadian artists. As a photographer and art dealer, Smith befriended many of the artists she represented, including Molly Lamb Bobak (1922- ) and Bruno Bobak (1923- ), Miller Brittain (1912-1968), Jack Humphrey (1901-1967), Fritz Brandtner (1896-1969 ), Daniel Edwin (Ted) Campbell (1904- ), Pegi Nicol MacLeod (1904-1949), Ghitta Caiserman-Roth (1923-2005), and others. In 1970, Smith's work was exhibited at the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick in a joint exhibition with the University of New Brunswick. In April 1974, her photographs were displayed in the exhibition "Fredericton: The Early Years", at the Provincial Archives. Madge Smith died on February 18, 1974.
The fonds consists of 38 photographs taken by Madge Smith, 1 photograph by J.E. Kennedy, and one drawing. The main subject of the photographs is Pegi Nicol MacLeod, at work in her studio and outdoors. Other subjects consist of the Observatory Art Centre and scenes in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Included are two postcard photographs of the Fredericton Market taken by Smith, as well as photographs of floats designed by MacLeod for the University of New Brunswick Centennial Parade in 1948.
