Biographical Sketch

Ann Hillier McMenomin attended the British Columbia College of Arts in Vancouver, British Columbia during the two years of the school's operation (1933-1935). The College was founded and directed by Canadian artists Frederick Horsman Varley (1881-1969), Jock Macdonald (1897-1960), and Vienna born stage design instructor, Harry Täuber (1900-1975). While a student at the school, McMenomin won prizes in theatre and costume design at the Canadian Fine Arts and Handicraft exhibition of the Junior League of Canada in Hamilton, Ontario. During this time, McMenomin kept scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, and photographs related to her work. When Täuber travelled to Vancouver Island in 1934 and again after he moved to Nootka, Vancouver Island following the closure of the school, he corresponded briefly with McMenomin.
