Administrative History

The Friends of the National Gallery of Canada (FoNG; formerly National Gallery Association) is a volunteer organization devoted to the promotion of art scholarship and to the appreciation of art in general, and of the art collection of the National Gallery of Canada (NGC) in particular. The Association was founded in 1958 and its first President was Canadian diplomat and art collector, G. Hamilton Southam (1916-2008). The Association was initially conceived as a nation-wide organization than would reflect the Gallery's status as a national institution and have a local branch in every major Canadian city. It was also hoped that the Association would operate as a kind of national book club in order to boost the sale of Gallery publications across the country. However, due to a lack of funding in its early years, the Association was forced to confine itself, in the manner of city art galleries, to local support of the Gallery through fundraising and voluntary service. Over the years, membership in the organization swelled. Since its inception it has initiated and/or been involved with numerous programmes and activities including the English and French docent programmes, Candlelight Suppers, the Concert Music Series, Art Visits and Tours, and the Rideau Convent Chapel Restoration Fund. In 1982, with its incorporation, the National Gallery Association formally changed its name to the Friends of the National Gallery of Canada in order to better reflect its mandate.

The mandate of the FoNG includes fundraising on the Gallery's behalf. The largest fundraising project undertaken, to date, was the drive to raise money in order to reconstruct Canadian architect canon Georges Bouillon's (1841-1932) dismantled Rideau Convent Chapel (built 1887-1888) within the walls of the new building of the NGC. The project was conceived of as early as 1972, when, despite protester's efforts, the original Grey Nuns residence and day school for young women that housed the Chapel on Rideau Street, Ottawa, was demolished. At that time, the Government of Canada declared the Chapel a national historic site, and the NGC, on the strong recommendation of then director, Jean S. Boggs (b. 1922), adopted the idea of incorporating the Chapel into the new NGC. The Chapel was dismantled and warehoused until the Gallery's construction and until such time as the Gallery could afford to pay for its preservation and installation. Over the years, supporters within the Gallery kept the Chapel Project alive, insisting that it be incorporated into architect Moshe Safdie's (b. 1938) designs for the new Gallery. The FoNG committed to raising money to install the Chapel in 1984, on the advice of then NGC director, Joseph Martin (b. 1922). The result was an unprecedented fundraising effort. By September 1987, the FoNG had raised $350,000 for its Chapel Restoration Fund.
