Biographical Sketch
Alexander Young Jackson (1882-1974), Canadian painter and founding member of the Group of Seven, mentored younger artists from the Montreal-based Beaver Hall Group. Jackson often painted with members of the Group and he voluntarily served as the link between them and the Group of Seven in Toronto. Jackson was close to and corresponded with Beaver Hall artists, including Sarah Robertson (1891-1948) and Prudence Heward (1896-1947). He also corresponded with Canadian art critic Graham McInnes (1912-1970). McInnes was originally from London, UK and was educated in Melbourne, Australia. He authored such books as A Short History of Canadian Art (1939) and Canadian Art (1950) and contributed numerous short articles to magazines. McInnes also worked as Co-ordinator of Graphic for the National Film Board of Canada (1946). In 1965, MacInnes was appointed the Permanent Delegate to UNESCO for Canada.

Scope and Contents
Fonds consists of correspondence from A.Y. Jackson to Sarah Robertson, Prudence Heward, and Graham McInnes. Letters to Robertson and Heward discuss Jackson's work; the work of Robertson and Heward; exhibitions in which they were involved (including the Group of Seven exhibition, Art Gallery of Toronto, 1928, and the Canadian Group of Painters exhibition, 1933), including critical response to those exhibitions; artists (including members of the Beaver Hall Group); the controversy over the British Empire exhibition at Wembley; politics; and contemporary events. Letters to McInnes discuss Jackson's work, publications, and exhibitions; the National Gallery of Canada, its staff and its acquisitions; the attitude of government towards art; and the Art Gallery of Ontario, its staff and its acquisitions. Both sets of correspondence often include newspaper clippings related to various art exhibitions. The collection also includes letters from Robertson to Jackson, which discuss work and personal matters, and a letter to Jackson from Heward's mother, Efa Heward, regarding Heward's death and memorial exhibition.
