Biographical SketchAlexander Young Jackson (1882-1974), Canadian painter and founding member of the Group of Seven, mentored younger artists from the Montreal-based Beaver Hall Group. Jackson often painted with members of the Group and he voluntarily served as the link between them and the Group of Seven in Toronto. Jackson was close to and corresponded with Beaver Hall artists, including Sarah Robertson (1891-1948) and Prudence Heward (1896-1947). He also corresponded with Canadian art critic Graham McInnes (1912-1970). McInnes was originally from London, UK and was educated in Melbourne, Australia. He authored such books as A Short History of Canadian Art (1939) and Canadian Art (1950) and contributed numerous short articles to magazines. McInnes also worked as Co-ordinator of Graphic for the National Film Board of Canada (1946). In 1965, MacInnes was appointed the Permanent Delegate to UNESCO for Canada.
