Biographical Sketch

Douglas M. Duncan (1902-1968), Canadian bookbinder, art dealer, and collector, is best remembered as one of the early supporters and promoters of Canadian art. The son of Fannie Elizabeth Moerdyke (1872- ) and Smith Frederick Duncan (1874-1963, President, Provincial Paper Mills, 1929-1946), Duncan was educated at Toronto and Paris and traveled extensively in Europe, spending most of his summers abroad between 1928-1939. After returning to Canada, he operated a bookbinding studio in Toronto. In 1936, Duncan became a founding member of the experimental Picture Loan Society. The Picture Loan Society was the first gallery in Canada to operate on a system of low-cost commission, making the purchase of art more affordable by renting pictures to prospective clients while at the same time providing affordable exhibition space for artists. By 1940, Duncan abandoned the bookbinding trade, becoming the Society's sole administrator. Artists on its roster included Carl Schaefer (1903-1995), L.L. Fitzgerald (1890-1956), "Scottie" Wilson (1890-1972), Harold Town (1924-1990), Paul Emile Borduas (1905-1960), Isabel McLaughlin (1903-2002), and Bertram Brooker (1888-1955). In particular, Duncan admired the work of artist David Milne (1882-1953), for whom he acted as sole agent. Over the years, Duncan amassed a large collection of Canadian art, including a significant number of works by Milne. After Duncan's death, his sister, Frances Duncan Barwick (1909-1984), arranged for the distribution of most of the over 4,000 works of art in Duncan's collection to many public or university art collections in Canada. In the years following Duncan's death, Barwick published a book on her brother's collection entitled, Pictures in the Douglas M. Duncan Collection (1975).
