Biographical SketchMary Lillian Clarke, Canadian portrait painter, was born in Saint John, New Brunswick in 1904. She began her art career as a member of the Saint John Art Club, founded in 1908 as an instructional organization with the stated aim of "promoting and facilitating greater knowledge and love of art on the part of the public generally." During the 1930's Clarke relocated to Ottawa but maintained contact with members of the Club including Julia Crawford (1896-1968), painter and teacher; Elizabeth Russell Holt (d. 1971), painter, photographer, and teacher; and Clara McGivern (b. 1859). Holt was a graduate of Valparaiso University, Indiana. She worked as the Junior Instructor at the Saint John Art Club School (1912-1934) and then as an art instructor at the Netherwood School in Rothesay, New Brunswick. M. Lillian Clarke died in Ottawa in 2002. Return to the Table of Contents Scope and Contents of the CollectionThe fonds consists of 6 newspaper clippings from the Saint John Telegraph Journal; 2 cards addressed to M. Lillian Clarke from Clara McGivern; 2 unaddressed notes from Marion Wood; 1 unsigned note regarding Elizabeth Holt's death; and 9 photographs. The clippings relate to members of the Saint John Art Club and the correspondence from Wood refers to the career of Elizabeth Holt. The photographs include an undated image of Elizabeth Holt with camera; a portrait of Wilfred E. Clarke QC, brother of M. Lillian Clarke (including negative); painted photographs of the Saint John River (mounted on a Christmas card) and the Saint John Market Slip (mounted on a card); a photograph of Clara McGivern Julia Crawford and M. Lillian Clarke at McGivern's summer residence near Digby, N.S.; a photograph of M. Lillian Clarke; a photograph of M. Lillian Clarke and Ruth Starr (1903-1950) at the Star residence, Saint John, New Brunswick; and an image entitled Sunset on the Kennebecasis. With the exception of the image of Elizabeth Holt, all photographs are annotated with an inscription indicating that they are by Elizabeth Holt.
