Kathleen Mary Fenwick (1901-1973), Curator of Prints and Drawings at the National Gallery of Canada (NGC) from 1929 to 1968, was born in London, England, and educated at the Goldsmith College of Art and at the Académie Julian in Paris. She immigrated to Canada in 1928 to take the position of assistant to the Curator of Prints in the Prints and Drawings Department at the National Gallery. She became Curator of Prints and Drawings in 1929. One of Fenwick's most noteworthy Gallery publications was a catalogue highlighting European drawings in the Gallery's collection (with A.E. Popham (1889-1970), 1965, volume 4). After her retirement, Fenwick worked on a catalogue of the Gallery's English drawings.
Fenwick received an honourary LL.D from the University of Toronto in 1966 and the Order of Canada in 1968. She was founding editor, with Donald Buchanan (1908-1966), of the Gallery's first art periodical entitled Canadian Art, was an advisor to the Canadian delegation to the first UNESCO Conference, Chair of the Canadian Film Awards (1958-1973), and Director of the International Fine Arts Exhibition at Expo 67 in Montreal. She was involved in various organizations, personally and professionally, throughout her career and retirement years, serving on the Canadian Eskimo Arts Council (1968-1972); the National Arts Centre Advisory Committee for the Visual Arts (1964-1969); and the National Film Society, Ottawa branch (later, Ottawa Film Society; 1940-1973).

Scope and Contents of the Collection
The fonds consists of personal and work diaries and engagement calendars (1925-1973); correspondence (both personal and professional); material related to seminars, lectures and addresses prepared by Fenwick (including various writings by Fenwick); clippings and correspondence related to books and publications on art or art exhibitions; a series of reproductions collected by Fenwick illustrating the history of the printed book; material related to Fenwick's involvement in various societies, councils, boards and groups; and personal material (including Fenwick's sketchbooks). The fonds also includes photographs (both professional and personal) of Fenwick, her friends, works of art, events, and exhibitions.

Series consists of personal and work diaries, engagement calendars and datebooks. There is a also a telephone and address book, a book of quotations, and a diary of 'books read'. Books typically include abbreviated lists of personal and political events, quotations, lists (household expenses, books to read, etc.) and newspaper clippings, as well as job related meetings, contacts, and notes. There is also a series of calendar pads with annotations (telephone calls, letters, meetings) related to Fenwick's employment at the National Gallery of Canada and an unsent, blank, postcard of Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris.

Series consists of personal and employment related correspondence. It includes correspondence between Fenwick, H.O. McCurry, Eric Brown (1877-1939) and the Department of Public Works, Canada regarding Fenwick's hiring at the National Gallery (including copies of her school transcript and birth certificate). There are also letters related to Fenwick's tenure in the Prints and Drawings Department at the Gallery, including letters from former Canadian Prime Minister, John Diefenbaker (1895-1979) and art historian, Sir Anthony Blunt (1907-1983). Artists who corresponded with Fenwick include Harold Town (1924-1990), Goodridge Roberts (1904-1974), Pegi Nicol MacLeod (1904-1949), David Milne (1882-1953), Fred Varley (1881-1969), Emily Carr (1871-1945), and Jack Nichols (1921-). Correspondence related to Fenwick's work on the Canadian Eskimo Arts Council, the National Arts Centre Advisory Committee, the Canadian Film Awards, the NGC Association, the Print Council of America, UNESCO and the National Film Society of Canada, Ottawa Branch are all included in the series. There is also a drawing by Donald Buchanan. The series includes correspondence related to Fenwick's own exhibitions, invitations and Christmas cards sent to Fenwick, applications made by Fenwick (including her application for the Commonwealth Fund Service Fellowship, 1935), and correspondence related to Fenwick's awards and honours (LLD, University of Toronto; Order of Canada; Centennial Medal). Finally, the series includes letters related to Fenwick's retirement and Estate and photographs sent to Fenwick (including 5 photographs of Fenwick, 4 photographs of 17th and 18th century French drawings, a photograph of artist Johan Barthold Jongking's (1819-1891) house and a photograph of Molly Lamb Bobak (1922- ) and Bruno Bobak (1923- ). |

The series includes correspondence with art historians and collectors such as former Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum, A.M. Hind (1880-1957), Armide Oppé (1878-1957), Trenchard Cox (1905-1995), and Edward Buckman (1904-1973). Also included are photographs of Autun Cathedral, two drawings by Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890), and a poster for a Henri Matisse (1869-1954) exhibition held at the Maison de la Pensée, Paris, 6 June-24 September 1950. |

It includes introductions written by Fenwick for visiting lecturers - including art historians A.M. Hind (1880-1957) and Marcel Rothlisberger (1929- ) - and notices, written by Fenwick, for newspaper articles and ads announcing lectures and exhibitions. Notes for Telecasts for the National Gallery of Canada (1965) and photographs from a photo-story on the Gallery (1961) are also included in the series. |

Series includes reproductions of prints from the 13th through to the 19th centuries from Great Britain, Italy, Germany and Austria, Bohemia, France, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain. The series also includes reproduced pictures illustrating the history of bookbinding in Europe. |

Series consists of sketchbooks and drawings by Fenwick, verses and poetry by Fenwick, one unidentified drawing, newspaper clippings on miscellanous subjects (including friends of Fenwick, such as Donald Buchanan and Canadian musicians Mr. and Mrs. Halkett, and theatre reviews), material related to trips and lessons that Fenwick took, Fenwick's certificates and degrees, membership cards, shareholder information, receipts, Fenwick's apartment lease, account books, cheque books, and material related to Fenwick's expense account at the National Gallery. There is also material related to the settling of Fenwick's Estate. The series includes photographs, such as publicity photographs of Fenwick made for the National Gallery, photographs of Fenwick on various trips for the Gallery and photographs of Fenwick on holidays with friends. The series includes six photographs of Donald Buchanan, one photograph of Canadian musicians Andrew and Margaret Halke, a photograph of an unidentified drawing, and a photograph of flooding in Ottawa (1947).
