Biographical Sketch
Lawren Stewart Harris (1885-1970) was a founding member of the Group of Seven in 1920. In 1934 Harris left Toronto and established himself in Hanover, New Hampshire. Harris left his paintings in Toronto, in the basement of the Art Gallery of Toronto, in the Studio Building and on loan to various institutions. A friend and fellow artist, Doris Mills (later Speirs; 1894-1989) was asked or initiated the task of cataloguing and inventorying Harris' paintings. A typed inventory was prepared between July and December 1936 and an artist temporarily resident in the Studio Building, Hans Jensen, was engaged to do drawings of the inventoried works.

Scope and Contents of the Collection
The collection consists of sketches by Hans Jensen which illustrate 299 of the 710 Lawren Harris oil paintings and sketches listed by Doris Mills in her inventory of Harris' work. A note by Margaret Knox regarding the Jensen sketches is also included.
Source of supplied title proper: Titled based on the contents of the collection.
A copy of Doris Mills typed inventory of the Harris oil paintings and oil sketches is housed with the collection.
Immediate source of acquisition: Donated by Margaret Knox, daughter of Lawren Harris, 1997.
The sketches have been arranged following Doris Mills' inventory, which is believed to have been their original arrangement. Page numbers on the lower right corner of each page, indicate the order of the sketches when they were received by the National Gallery of Canada.
The catalogue of The Forum Exhibition of Modern American Painters (New York: M. Kennerley, c1916), annotated by Lawren Harris, now in the Special Collections of the National Gallery of Canada Research Library & Archives, was also donated by Margaret Knox in 1997.
