Siegfried Haase was born in 1916 in Stolp, Pomerania, a German province along the Baltic coast. His professional career began in 1932, when he apprenticed in typography and advertising. For three years beginning in 1936 Haase was enrolled at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin, where he attended the classes of Professor Ferdinand Spiegel and worked in the studio of Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945). A short period at the Brussels Academy followed, but his studies there were interrupted by the Second World War. During the war Haase worked as a radio operator and as a war artist with the Luftwaffe in Belgium and France. After the war he was employed as a freelance artist in Wiesbaden, Germany, doing interior design and murals in industrial and theatrical buildings.
In 1951 Hasse immigrated to Canada with his wife, Hedi, and their two daughters, Ingrid and Barbara, settling in Herring Cove, a small fishing village near Halifax. In Halifax Haase found employment as a graphic artist with Eastern Photo Engravers and later with Maritime Photo Engravers before being hired in 1964 to teach graphic techniques, printmaking, and illustration at the Nova Scotia College of Art. Haase was a member of the Nova Scotia Society of Artists from 1959 until 1972 and participated in several of the Society's annual exhibitions. His paintings, etchings, lithographs, and woodcuts were also exhibited at St. Mary's University Art Gallery (1967 and 1972); Art Gallery, Mount Saint Vincent University (1968); Dartmouth Heritage Museum (1968 and 1972); Centennial Art Gallery, Nova Scotia Museum of Fine Arts (1974); and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (1994). Haase retired from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) in 1982 and after the death of his wife, Hedi, in 1984, he moved to Cambridge, Ontario, to live with his daughter, Barbara. In 1989 Haase moved to Ottawa, where he remained until his death in 1996.

The fonds originally consisted of trade cards and certificates related to Haase's early employment in Canada, personal correspondence and invoices, photographs of the artist, and photographs of artworks. The second accrual added personal documents, correspondence, magazine and newspaper clippings, and miscellaneous ephemera. Most of the material in the fonds relates to Haase's career as an artist in Canada.

Series includes passports, Canadian Citizenship documents, trade certificates, lists of paintings and prints, and other personal papers. Included is a German passport issued to Haase in 1951. The trade certificates in the series relate to Haase's employment as an engraver and lithographer at Maritime Photo Engravers during the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Series consists of photographs of the artist and photographs of twenty various paintings and prints. Among the photographs of Haase is one showing him at work during his early years in Canada and one taken in 1982 on the occasion of his retirement from the Nova Scotia School of Art and Design. Several of the photographs include the title of the painting or print on the back. |

Series consists mostly of letters addressed to Siegried Haase. The first file is from the original donation in 1985 and contains letters related to exhibitions and sales. The file also contains a few items related to Haase's curriculum vitae, including a student identification card and letters of recommendation. Material in the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia file relates mainly to the exhibition Keeping Faith: The Life and Work of Siegfried Hasse, held at the Gallery in 1994. The file includes a brief biography of Haase written by Horst Deppe (b. 1929), a colleague who worked with Haase at Maritime Photo Engravers and at the Nova Scotia School of Art and Design, and a typed version of the catalogue text written by John Murchie.

Series consists of brochures and invitations, posters, letterhead, and a coffee mug. A few of the brochures and invitations relate to the Nova Scotia School of Art and Design. The coffee mug, letterhead, and two posters were produced for the Archdiocese of Halifax and include a detail of Haase's Fishermen triptych (1971). A third poster, mounted on pressed board and laminated, shows the same work and was produced for the exhibition Lifelines: Canada's East Coast Fisheries held at the Canadian Museum of Civiliztion in 2001. |
