![]() A.R. Fleming Collection:Finding Aid
Biographical SketchAllan Robb Fleming (1929-1977), Canadian
graphic designer (First Fellow of the Graphic Designers of Canada, member
of the Royal Canadian Academy and of the Ontario College of Artists), studied
at the Western Technical School, Toronto and in England (typography;1953-1955).
Positions held by Fleming in Canada include Vice President and Director
of Creative Services, Cooper and Beatty (1957), Art Director, Maclean's
Magazine (1962) and Chief Designer, Publications, Toronto University Press
(1968). He helped to create Burns, Cooper, Donoahue, Fleming and Co. (1975)
and taught typography at the Ontario College of Art (1956; 1975-76). Fleming
was responsible for the well-known logo designs for Canadian National Railways
and Ontario Hydro. He designed mailers for various exhibitions at the Gallery
of Contemporary Art, Toronto (1957- ). Exhibitions of his work were held
at the Gallery of Contemporary Art (1958) and the Vancouver Art Gallery
(1976).

Scope and Contents of the CollectionThe collection consists of 4 exhibition
mailers designed by Fleming for exhibitions held at the Gallery of Contemporary
Art, as well as 1 mailer and 1 exhibition handout designed for Fleming's
own exhibition held at the Gallery of Contemporary Art (1958).
