Biographical Sketch
Terry Gail Guernsey (1947-1994), Canadian
art historian, worked as Assistant Curator, Vancouver Art Gallery (1971-1973),
Associate Professor, Carleton University (1981-1982), Art Co-ordinator,
National Capital Commission (1982-1985) and at various civil service postings.
Over the course of her career, Guernsey's research interests included post-Impressionism
and Jan van Eyck (MA, 1977; PhD incomplete, both Washington University,
Missouri, USA), but her main interest was in the field of Canadian sculpture
studies. Throughout her career, Guernsey compiled material for a comprehensive
survey publication on Canadian sculpture (1867-1950) and, at the time of
her death, she was in the initial stages of doctoral research on a new
PhD topic, Sacred Heart devotional sculpture in Quebec and New Brunswick
(1914-1918). She wrote two books on Ottawa sculpture for the National Capital
Commission (Sculpture Walks , 1985; Statues of Parliament Hill, 1986)
as well as several papers and articles on the subject. Guernsey served
on a number of National Capital Commission committees relating to sculpture,
including the committee for the Diefenbaker Monument and the committee
for the Monument to Queen Elizabeth II. She designed an exhibition for
the Public Archives of Canada on public sculpture in Ottawa (Monuments
and Vistas: Mackenzie King's Vision for the Capital of Canada, 1983)
which she also wrote up as a documentary script that she submitted to the
National Film Board of Canada.

Public Archives of Canada, material for Guernsey's exhibition on William
Lyon Mackenzie King (1874-1950) prepared for the Public Archives of Canada,
as well as research material on Sacred Heart devotional sculpture and early
Netherlandish art. The fonds also contains materials that relate to Guernsey's
