The 12,000 lights of the National Gallery of Canada's majestic Christmas tree will shine brightly throughout the holiday season
The lighting of the giant balsam Christmas tree will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 6. Enjoy a magical evening at the Gallery, complete with hot chocolate, music, and a huge sale on publications.
In keeping with tradition, the National Gallery of Canada (NGC) will erect an immense Christmas tree in its Great Hall for the holiday season. The tree will be adorned with 500 decorations and, 12,000 coloured lights that will shine brightly starting at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 6, and will remain lit until January 7, 2013. Starting at 6:00, members of the public are invited to sip hot chocolate and listen to music as they admire the balsam Christmas tree, which stands 12 metres high and has a diameter of 7 metres. The Christmas tree has been generously sponsored by Black & McDonald Limited. The Gallery’s Bookstore will also be offering a one-day huge sale on NGC publications, just in time for holiday shopping.
The NGC’s lighting ceremony coincides with those of the museums, historic buildings, and other national monuments in the National Capital Region, all part of Christmas Lights Across Canada, an annual celebration launched by the National Capital Commission in 1985.

One day, in-store only. From 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 6, the Gallery’s Bookstore will be offering visitors deep discounts on a large selection of the NGC’s exhibition catalogues. Known for their high-quality written content and images, the NGC’s publications make an excellent gift for yourself and loved ones. Members of the Gallery save even more when they show their card. Just in time for the holiday season, shoppers will also find a range of other gift ideas: jewellery, art reproductions, decorative items, games for children, and much more.
Hours
The NGC is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Closed Mondays. Open from December 26 to 31 and from January 2 to 6. Closed on December 24 and 25, and on January 1.
