Michel de Broin's conceptually driven projects breathe new life and meaning into found objects and "readymade" materials. He created "Majestic" for the international biennial "Prospect.2 New Orleans" (2011) from salvaged streetlamps that had been damaged and displaced after Hurricane Katrina. "The work is named for ... a funeral parlour in the city's historical Faubourg Lafayette ward," he writes, "I gave it this strange, untranslatable name because I like the idea of a birth taking place in a funeral home." Repurposed and relit, the monumental sculpture is both a beacon and an oddity on the landscape, a vessel for communication and a marker of hope.
