The Abduction of Proserpine on a Unicorn, 1516

Albrecht Dürer
German, 1471 - 1528
etching on laid paper
31.1 x 21.4 cm; image: 30.5 x 21.1 cm
Purchased 1925
National Gallery of Canada (no. 3157)

Although Dürer primarily produced woodcuts and engravings, he did execute six prints in the new technique of etching on an iron plate prepared with acid-resistant resin. While picking flowers in a meadow with her companions, Proserpine was abducted by Pluto, the god of the underworld. In Dürer’s version of the story, the god rides a wild-eyed unicorn.
