Renaissance Ball in Celebration of the Gallery's 125th Anniversary Saturday 28 May
Ottawa, Canada - January 20, 2005
The National Gallery of Canada Foundation, created in 1997 to promote private support for the Gallery, will present its first-ever national fundraising event on May 28, 2005. The Renaissance Ball at the Gallery will mark the 125th Anniversary of the institution and will attract Gallery supporters from across Canada, including a distinguished group of leaders from the arts, government and business.
The financial goal of this extraordinary celebration of art and art patronage is to raise one million dollars ($1 million). The proceeds from the Ball will go toward the purchase of a work of art for the permanent collection, a work which will be featured in the Gallery’s Renaissance exhibition. In addition, the proceeds will support the circulation of the Gallery’s permanent collection and traveling exhibitions across Canada, as well as childhood art educational programs.
Thomas d’Aquino, Chairman of the Foundation’s Board of Directors and Co-Chair of the Renaissance Ball, says, “This 125th anniversary celebration will mark a new chapter in the life of the Gallery, one of the finest institutions of its kind in the world, and an institution acclaimed for its collection, for the expertise of its curators, and for the quality of its educational programming. The Foundation’s goal is to raise appreciation in Canada and abroad for this national treasure.”
The Renaissance Ball takes its inspiration from the Gallery’s major summer exhibition of Renaissance art, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and the Renaissance in Florence. Guests at the Ball will be offered an exclusive opportunity to view the exhibition, which includes paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints by masters such as Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Bronzino, Andrea del Sarto, and Piero di Cosimo.
Pierre Théberge, Director of the National Gallery, says the exhibition will offer a unique opportunity for participants at the Ball to view works that have never before been seen together. “In fact, this occasion marks the first time a High Renaissance exhibition of this remarkable scope has been produced outside Florence. We are especially proud to acknowledge that the exhibition is exclusive to the National Gallery of Canada.”
“Mr. d’Aquino has done an exceptional job of attracting patrons and financial supporters from across Canada and even internationally,” says Marie Claire Morin, President and CEO of the Foundation. In addition, the organizing committee, headed by Myriam Ouimet, is planning an evening that will be inspired by the Boboli Gardens of Florence and the city’s great cultural and culinary traditions. It promises to be a most memorable evening – the Gallery’s Great Hall will welcome guests to a sumptuous feast, dancing, and of course, a private viewing of the exhibition.”
The Chairman of the National Gallery of Canada Board of Trustees, Donald Sobey, strongly supports this Foundation initiative. Both he and his spouse, Beth Sobey, have joined with Thomas and Susan d’Aquino in co-chairing the Renaissance Ball.
