Jackson was a private in the Canadian Army’s 60th Battalion and fought near Ypres until an injury in June 1916 sent him back to England. He returned to France and Belgium the following year, this time as a war artist, to document the devastating aftermath of battles. The artist’s rendering of Ypres is deliberately flat and muddy, creating a forlorn atmosphere.
