Yves Gaucher

Yos/Ps m/89

1989
"Yos/Ps m/89" is one of a series of paintings in pale colours, taking up some ideas suggested in the "Grey on Grey" works of 1967-69 and continuing with the symmetrical, open composition that the artist established in his "Dark" paintings. Tinted greys make up two of the four bands of colour, and grey is part of the mix of the other colours in small amounts. the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein wrote that "grey can make a colour shine"; here our perception of the contrasting warm and cool colours is heightened by their relationship to grey. Flatly applied, unmodulated, with their subtle harmonies, Gaucher's pale bands of colour suggest pure light.
