Wrecked Tanks near Sanctuary Wood

17 August 1919
"Around Hooge and on the ridge was a tank graveyard; wrecked and burnt out British tanks, some bogged down in shell holes, some with their treads broken, some with holes in their armour, some with shells and gasoline tins inside, burnt and blackened. A look inside one of these places of cremation stirred the only feeling of horror I felt." Unpublished autobiography, 1947
