Cornelius Krieghoff

Winter Landscape, Laval

1862
Krieghoff was fond of presenting the daily winter survival activities of French-Canadian settlers. In this frontier landscape, family members gather, chop and transport firewood on an icy winter day. In the foreground, a coureur de bois – an independent fur trader, identified by his woolen coat, red sash and fur hat – appears to be asking for directions.
