Anthonie Waterloo
Water Mill among Trees
after 1650
A renowned draughtsman and etcher in his time, Anthonie Waterloo created mostly forest and woodland scenes with both Dutch and Italianate motifs, often publishing these works in series. The composition in this drawing is close to that seen in a print signed by Waterloo of a similar water mill. In both works the view of the mill is somewhat obstructed by the tall trees. However, the horizontal format of the present sheet helps to draw the viewer in, as if walking in the wooded area in the foreground, which opens onto the rest of the landscape.
