James Wilson Morrice

War Scene

1918
Throughout his time working for the Canadian War Memorials Fund, Morrice created numerous works that range widely in style and feeling. For this sketch, he used both graphite and a blunt object to draw on the wet paint surface, highlighting the lines of the composition in a more expressive manner. The resulting effect is one of beauty amid the ruins.
