Vincent Massey

1938
Vincent Massey, the first Canadian-born Governor General (1952-59), was an important patron of the arts. As trustee of the Massey Foundation, he donated many paintings to the National Gallery of Canada, notably a large collection of early 20th-century British art. This portrait was painted while Massey served as Canada's High Commissioner to Britain, from 1935 to 1946.
