Feltre is a small town in the northern part of the Veneto not far from Treviso, where the Dutch-born Lodewijck Toeput spent the last half of his life. This drawing was probably executed shortly after his move to Italy in the 1570s. A view of Treviso was engraved by Joris Hoefnagel after a design by Toeput for Georg Braun and Franz Hogenberg s atlas Civitatis Orbis terrarum . . . (Cologne, 1579-93). It is likely that Toeput's view of Feltre was also intended to be printed. Feltre has changed little in the four centuries since Toeput made this drawing.
