Eugène Boudin

View of Étaples: Low Tide

1886
Born in the port town of Honfleur and the son of a ship's captain, Boudin developed an early interest in the sea. He was a strong advocate of painting directly from nature, encouraging Monet in this activity and participating in the first Impressionist exhibition of 1874. Called the "master of the skies" by his friend Corot, Boudin's obsession with the movement of clouds and water is highlighted in this work.
