Achille-Etna Michallon

View at Tivoli

1821-1822
When working in the studio, landscape painters used sketches made out-of-doors to create idealized views, or looked to them for effects of light and weather. Alternately, as here, artists could try to retain something of a sketch’s vivacity and truthfulness in the finished painting to convey the experience of a real place. Tivoli, with its ancient ruins set amidst waterfalls, was among the most famous sites in Italy. To pique our interest, Michallon chose a less familiar view.
