Francesco Salviati

Victory

c. 1550-1555
This drawing represents an allegorical female figure as Victory, as indicated by the military references like the trophy of arms and the shield. It embodies the slow rhythms and ethereal, decorative quality of Salviati’s later work when he was active in Rome on some of the most important fresco decorations since Michelangelo’s Sistine chapel ceiling, to which the style of this sketch is indebted. The black chalk is handled in close parallel lines, which suggest the finish of marble and reveal the artist’s desire to recreate the smooth surface of Michelangelo’s sculptures.
