James Wilson Morrice

Venetian Girl

c. 1902
In 1912 this painting was erroneously exhibited under the title A Symphony in Pink, an allusion to the buoyant hues of pink that animate the canvas and show the influence of American artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler. Whether intended by Morrice or not, the connection between art and music implied by this alternative title presents clear associations between his work and that of other modern artists.
