Traditional beliefs included the existence of a number of unusual beings such as inukpasugjuit (giants), inugarulligaarjuit (little people), tariaksuit (shadow people), inurajait and inualuit (who were often shaman’s helpers), nunamiutait (the spirits of the land), qallupilluit (sea monsters) and ijirait (creatures that could take on almost any form). Some of these beings could be seen by anyone, but others were visible only to the shaman’s inner eye. Stories about these beings have inspired Inuit artists for generations.
