Peter Doig

Untitled (Double Portrait)

2002
Peter Doig’s portrait of the well-known Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young is based on the cover of « Déjà Vu », the second album recorded by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young (1970). Doig, a longtime fan of Young’s distinctive music, has undoubtedly used this work to pay homage to him, but he also looks beyond the star’s image in order to make visible “a mood.” The darkness of Doig’s work may reflect the artist’s lamentation for the now-commercialized ideals of rock and roll that musicians like Young once represented.
