Barbara Spohr's most beloved subjects were her immediate domestic surroundings and the city of Nelson, BC. Her work has been described as "whimsical." She often combined text with her images, or surrounded her photographs with festive colours and designs. Spohr presented the world in celebration. The humblest subject matter became the focus of her camera: a coffee cup, sunflower or ornamental cabbage. Her forays into the city reveal her commitment to her fellow inhabitants, as well as her desire to record daily life in, as she put it, "the curiously civilized community" of which she was a part.
