Annie Pootoogook

Underwear

Category:
As if wanting to take her detailed renderings of everyday objects to an even more meticulous level of examination, Pootoogook has begun to draw a form of still life. Featured are items that often have a personal or family reference: her own red-lace bra and her grandmother’s thick-rimmed glasses, for example. Similarly, the “his” and “hers” pairing in "Underwear " suggests a couple and their intimate relationship. Having branded “Nunavut” into the waistband of the man’s briefs and shown a partially visible label reading “Made in China” on the woman’s pair, Pootoogook gives a witty nod to globalization and consumer issues.
