David Tomas
Time Transfixed III
1992-1994
Category:
David Tomas is concerned with the relation of artistic techniques to technological processes. For him, René Magritte's 1938 surrealist painting "Time Transfixed" is a critical reference because it combines several images symbolic of key technological developments of the nineteenth century, such as photography and the railway, and their impact on our perception of time. The frozen locomotive and stopped clock from Magritte's painting, along with with a mirrored tunnel ¿ all suspended at eye level ¿ create an impression of time and vision transfixed at a crucial point.
