George Frederic Watts

Time, Death and Judgement

1864-1886
This painting was among the first gifts to the National Gallery of Canada. It represents Watts’ most ambitious contribution to his House of Life series of allegorical paintings, which sought to record a symbolic history of mankind. Above the youthful figure of Time with his scythe and Death, who bears flowers, hovers the figure of Judgement, holding a set of scales.
