Gawen Hamilton

Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford, and his Family

1732
A contemporary described this as done "in the conversation manner. The disposition genteel & agreable; the countenances like & freely pencilled; the draperies, silks & decorations well touched & disposed … a masterpiece of Mr. Hamilton’s painting." "Conversation" pieces were informal group portraits, the sitters shown at leisure, much appreciated at the time. "His paintings of conversations … are agreable, and much variety & correctness of mode & manner of the time & habits. He may well be esteemed a rival to Hogarth, having as much justness if not so much fire."
