Louis-Philippe Hébert

The Wittler or the Budding Sculptor

c. 1900
From a modest farming background, as evidenced by the hole in the youth's pants and bare feet, Louis-Philippe Hébert recalls the birth of his skills as an artist carving toys and figures out of wood for his younger brother. Personal memories evoke the rapid transition of Canada and of its artists from rural isolation to a more cosmopolitan and urban world.
