The images in Ian Wallace’s Gandia I and II present two views of a “paint test” on a rough concrete wall. Taken in a villa under construction in Gandia, Spain, the photographs are used by the artist in an ironic nod to abstract artists' gestural brushstrokes. Wallace states, “As is common in my work, I appropriate through photographic documentation phenomena which is not ‘art,’ and transform it into my art.” He is interested in exploring the threshold between photography and painting, motivated by the question that initially spurred his practice in 1967: "What is possible as a painting?"
