Salvator Rosa

The Vision of Aeneas

c. 1663-1664
Based on Virgil's epic Latin poem the Aeneid, this print illustrates the river god Tiber appearing to the Trojan Prince Aeneas in a dream to reveal his destiny. The artist has created an intriguing emotional interaction between the two figures by contrasting their poses. Rosa worked in Rome and Florence, but is associated stylistically with the Neapolitan school because of his brusque, unidealized manner.
