The Valley of the Mole

3 September 1855
Category:
"The Valley of the Mole" was included in "The Photographic Album for the Year 1855", accompanied by a stanza from a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley. It is an idyllic scene, the rustic cart evoking ideas about labour and the use of the land for physical and spiritual sustenance. The infusion of Romantic symbolism is in keeping with other images from this album but it is also typical of the pastoral landscape paintings done by many Victorian artists.
