Walter Allward devoted his life to the realization of sculptural monuments and his works can be found in Toronto ("South African War Memorial" on University Avenue, 1904-1911), Ottawa ("Baldwin-Lafontaine Monument" on Parliament Hill, 1907-1913), Brantford, Ontario ("Bell Telephone Memorial", 1909-1917), and Vimy, France ("Canadian War Memorial" 1921-1936), among other places. "The Storm" is one of the few small bronzes he realized. The figure, her face hidden by her raised arm and cloak, fights against the elements, evoking the brutal struggle of humanity during the First World War.
